Cultivating artistry in Edmonton as an accomplished artist, performer, choreographer, producer, and dedicated teacher.
MEET MARYNIA
I create dance theatre, dance films and multi-disciplinary performances and I am passionate about dance and its ability to empower people, communities and societies. I am passionate about bringing dance into the public and exposing new audiences. I find that my aspirations are connected with the interdisciplinary world and physical movement. Through physical movement, I mean to be true to your body and impulses which you feel from inside. I draw a little bit from physical theatrical areas, and a little bit from dance. I am interested in simple movement and repetition. When I’m thinking about those things, they start to be intriguing for me. I know that this is my way to work, to create.
I am a dancer, performing artist, choreographer and dance educator. I create a multi-disciplinary and socially engaging dance for theatre, stage and the public space. I use the body, visual imagery, technology and props to create thought-provoking and visually stimulating dance experiences.
ARTISTIC STATEMENT
My values in my creative work are honesty, integrity and telling truth through movement and dance. I strive to communicate clearly to the audience by being true to myself and believing in my story. I hope I can reach and touch others through my work I feel connected with this opportunity. The collaboration will open more possibilities during the creative time at the studio. Will open the horizons of thinking about the creative process. I’m open to learning, observing, and absorbing knowledge to make my piece develop. I like to see and make new things, which will help me in my future career.
I have many years of experience in the field of contemporary dance, improvisation and performance art gained while studying at the Poznan School of Social Sciences majoring in Dance, and participating in a variety of dance projects. When I finished my studies in Poland I decided to come to Calgary and practice in the dance group WM2 at W&M Physical Theatre. I had the opportunity to take classes with Wojciech Mochniej and Melissa Monteros at the University of Calgary. I was dancing in W&M Physical Theatre with different choreographers such as Wojciech Mochniej, Tania Alvarado, and Marie France. My main dance base is contemporary dance, but I do not close myself to other dance techniques. I am open to new forms of expression, where I can take full advantage of stage experience.
All of the experiences I have gathered through different events have allowed me to build my own practice. This practice is a compilation of physical floor work which helps to explore the idea of gravity and weight. I am developing the idea of the body as an object of weight which reacts to physical impulses - how our body sees and reacts to impulses. I am interested in discovering and exploring the reasons and impulses causing movement.
